Scientists tell us that we only have a few years to get serious about global warming solutions, and with gridlock holding up action in Congress, it’s up to the states to take action.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that here in Illinois we have a chance to take exactly the sort of action we need to help stop global warming.

Of course the car companies and oil companies will be trying to convince the General Assembly not to take action, but that’s why our legislators need to hear from ordinary voters who care about stopping global warming.

So I’m writing you today asking you to email your state representative to tell them that we need to take action now.

The heat is on to deploy clean energy solutions that will reduce global warming pollution quickly enough to avoid catastrophic climate change. The world’s best climate scientists have warned that unless we transform our energy systems over the next 10-20 years, the consequences of global warming could be catastrophic.

Fortunately, we have the tools to face this challenge in Illinois - with clean cars, more efficient buildings, and a new commitment to clean energy sources such as wind and solar power.

Even better — these global warming solutions are good for our economy! A new analysis shows that by cleaning up our global warming pollution, we’ll be creating jobs, saving consumers money on their gasoline and home energy bills, and increasing gross state product.

Environment Illinois is challenging our state legislators to make 2008 the year of global warming solutions in Illinois. This spring as the Illinois General Assembly meets in Springfield, we will ask them to support strong global warming policies, just like more than a dozen other states have already done. Specifically, we will ask them to support:

1. The Illinois Clean Cars Act (H.B. 3424): Clean car standards to cut automobile emissions of global warming pollution by 30%;
2. The Residential Energy Efficiency Code (S.B. 0526): Energy efficiency standards for new homes, so that when you buy a new house, you can be sure that it is properly insulated and incorporates modern, energy saving design elements that will save energy and save you money on your heating and cooling bills;
3. The Global Warming Response Act (H.B. 5254/S.B. 2220): A cap on global warming pollution from the largest industrial sources.
