He was a Europenan gypsy who played jazz guitar, and was an inspiration to many guitar players of all genres. The Allman Brothers Band song Jessica was written by Dickey Betts in tribute to Reinhardt — he wanted to write a song that could be played using only two fingers. This aspect of the artist’s work also motivated Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, who was inspired by Reinhardt to keep playing guitar after a factory accident that cost him two fingertips. Django was badly burned in a fire he started when he knocked over a candle. Two fingers on his left hand (his chording hand) were paralyzed and his style was developed by only the other two fingers to play. I fyou go to YouTube and look up “Django Reinhardt - Film Clip 1952″ you get a great look at his playing, as well as his gypsy heritage.
